10 things I know to be true in business.

THANK YOU to our sponsor HOTWORX, Sioux City!

When you decide to start a business, no one hands you a the manual for success. Sure, there are steps you can take to ensure a few things are in place to be successful, but even then, there is grit, determination and a certain stamina one must have to keep going, especially on the hard days. In this episode I break down 10 things I have learned in my time as a business owner that I wish I knew or had a better understanding of when I first started by business back in 2014.

1] Get a mentor or a coach. Or someone to help you with accountability.

  • Someone who you can share all the big goals with
  • Someone who can you help you break them down and put a plan in place
  • Someone you can call when things aren’t moving as fast as you want – or at all
  • Someone you can call when you’ve had a bad day
  • Someone you can call when you’ve had a good day and want to celebrate
  • Someone you don’t want to let down. Won’t let down.

2] Do not let someone who hasn’t achieved or aligns with your big goals or dreams talk you out of them.

  • As moms, we have an obligation to fulfill our dreams.
  • We are more than just a mom.

3] Celebrate when you win – learn when you lose.

  • This one has been hard for me
  • Always chasing the next goal
  • Or – when failed felt like the wins weren’t worth celebrating – they are
  • Small/large – it doesn’t matter. Celebrate wins.

4] You will change – allow your business to change with you.

  • You will change over the course of time – don’t stay the same in your business
  • Those who followed you before will stay – others may go, that’s ok
  • I closed one business to follow a new purpose – serving women – I wasn’t and still kinda not sure what that purpose was, but I did know it wasn’t what I was doing.
  • Make the hard move, and close a chapter if it will propel you to a greater one.

5] Remember your why. If you get too hung up on the money, it will begin to feel unfulfilling.

  • Many times we get started in our business because we want to solve a problem either we’re having or where we see others challenged.
  • This gets us started but our why is what will keep us going
  • Without a strong why, we can lose our way and therefore our joy, happiness and satisfaction in our business
  • Take your why, write it down and hang it where you can see it.
  • Visit it daily and even close your eyes and visualize what it means to you to be living the life you are working so hard for.

6] Do not place your value or self worth on how many social media followers you have.

  • Social media is a great tool for reaching more people, but remember it’s a tool, not something to place your entire self worth on.
  • Likes and followers are vanity metrics and don’t mean squat when it comes to your impact. If you have 10, 100, 1000 people that’s how many lives you get to impact everytime you show up. Pretty cool huh.
  • Stop worrying about getting more people to follow you and focus on those who already do. Engage them. Love on them. Write and produce content for them.

7] It can get lonely and you may want to quit, don’t.

  • Setting boundaries if you work from home.
  • Set office hours
  • Close the door when done for night

8] Rest when you need rest – burnout is a bitch.

  • 2019 year – worked every weekend – needed a reset
  • In 2020 promised myself I would not work weekends – and it worked.

9] Outsource your weaknesses. Do NOT work on them.

  • For me – tech.
  • Admin responsibilities – hire a VA
  • Continue to understand and focus on growing your strengths.
  • If don’t have $$ to hire – focus on what you can do right now using your strengths to make you $$.

10] How I would battle daily with:

  • Worthiness
  • Charging what I’m worth
  • Freedom
  • Happiness
  • Time management
  • Prioritization
  • Every single day – even still – I battle these. I had a hard few years of questioning what I even did – what did I even bring to the table for my clients? What was my gift – why would anyone want to hire me?
  • I had to get real raw with myself and own up to things I didn’t like, but also reward and be encouraged about the things I was good at – really good at.
  • You will need to be your biggest cheerleader because yes, some days your peers will pat you on the back and say good job, but most it will be you against yourself.

Don’t forget just how freaking awesome you are!
