Marketing: When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Professional

We know you’re all capable of doing a lot. If you’re a small business owner or work at a smaller company, then you wear more hats than most people. There’s probably some things you love doing and the reason why you do what you do, but there also might be some items you wish you didn’t have to do. Maybe it’s because it’s just not fun for you or it’s not your area of expertise and you feel it could be better done by someone else. That’s okay! We can’t all be good at everything. I mean, it’s crazy to even think that right?

So when it comes to marketing, you don’t have to be good at everything either. But sometimes, when businesses don’t have full time marketers, people within the company take over and it works just fine. But, other times people who have no experience or passion for marketing are trying to design a graphic and it doesn’t work out too well. There are some marketing tasks you can do yourself, but some are better off left to the pros.

DIY
Social Media – Now, we’re not saying you absolutely have to do social media on your own. Actually, we offer social media plans to businesses and love working on them! But social is something you can work on yourself. It can be simple and a regular presence is one of the most important things you can do. So if you post daily, or even more, you’re already doing a great job! Of course, some people are just too busy and their social pages sit inactive. That’s not going to get much interest, so if it’s happening, then you can ask for help!

Email/Newsletters – There are several email websites where you can design and edit a newsletter and send it out all from the site. It’s super helpful and you can create attractive emails, even if you’re not a designer! Since there are useful sites, this is an easy one to take care of yourself and be in contact with current and potential customers!

Hire a professional
Websites – If your business needs a website, it’s best to leave it to a pro. Not only can they make it look really great, but they’ll have the best ideas on how to make it get attention. Maybe you love something like scrolling photos, but they know users don’t usually sit and look at them all. It’ll save everyone time and your website visitors will have the best experience possible. A professional will also make sure your site is backed up, will be available for any issues, and will create a site that’s easy to maintain. So once a pro completes building the site, you can easily update it yourself when necessary!

Logos/Major graphics – Not everyone is a graphic designer. It’s a hard job and it takes a really creative person to be able to come up with different designs and make them all look neat and professional. So if you need a logo done, don’t try to do it yourself! You might have a great idea for what you want it to look like, but do you have the right software? It can be a pain to try to design something in a program when it’s not user friendly. If you feel comfortable creating simple graphics, go for it! But for bigger ones or a logo representing your business, don’t you want it to be the best quality and done by someone who knows what they’re doing?

If you feel in over your head, and like you can’t run your business and market it, it’s okay! We’d love to help or at least show you some ways to make life easier for you.
